The tune which forms the basis of this set of variations will be familiar to those who know Haydn's late string quartets, in particular, the "Emperor Quartet" , opus 76, no.3. This remarkable piece from the student composer Neukomm is distinguished both in pedigree and form. Neukomm studied with both Michael and Joseph Haydn and it was as a student of the latter that this piece came to be in 1799, in the same year that Haydn brothers composed their own separate variations of the tune for fortepiano. In the friendly contest that inspired this work, Neukomm's composition stands equal to those of his masters.
