Zwilich’s first piano concerto was commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra League for a gala premiere at the 1986 annual convention of the ASOL performed by the Detroit Symphony, featuring soloist Marc-André Hamelin, the 1985 winner of the Carnegie Hall competition for excellence in the performance of American Music.
