Richard Wernick’s piano concerto was commissioned by the National Symphony and premiered under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich in 1990, with Lambert Orkis as piano soloist. The individual movements are titled: Fantasia: “Tintinnabula Academiae Musicae” (composed in Jerusalem as a development of the carillon signal Wernick had recently composed for Philadelphia’s Academy of Music; “... the dream they smile and the kiss they whisper ...” (composed in a barn in Vermont); and “Réjouissance” (composed at home in Pennsylvania).
