As the conductor of the National Theatre Orchestra in Olso, Johan Halvorsen was primarily a composer of incidental and stage music. The Suite Ancienne Op.31 was arranged by the composer in 1911 from his music for the Holberg Play The Lying-In Room as a full concert work.
