The work, dedicated to Chantal Mathieu, was commissioned by the Association des Amis de la Musique on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the composer, to be premiered at the concert given in his honor November 17, 1997, by the Contemporary Music Society at the Lausanne Conservatory (Switzerland).
This trio has two main parts. The first has the character of a rhapsody and makes virtuostic demands of the three musicians. Frequent cadenzas highlight this section. The second part, an Allegro scherzando, allows the instrumentalists to have a light and mischievous dialogue which ends in a slow movement with the return of the lyrical leitmotif that opened the work and which constantly reappears in one or the other of the instruments, hence the title “Alternances chosen by the composer.
