He also became famous as composer of film music. The best songs from Sidney Lumet's film The Wiz - an adaptation of the musical 'The Wizzard of Oz' - were written by Jones together with Charlie Smalls. With his usual skill Peter Kleine Schaars combined his fine arrangements of several of these songs into a thrilling medley.
