This piece was originally written for double wind quintet, piano and percussion, and was commissioned by Macalaster Chamber Winds of St. Paul, Minnesota. With an orchestration for two flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, piano, percussion and strings, the piece maintains and even increases the exotic colour of the original version. According to the Chinese Zodiac, every year bears the name of an animal. Each animal has particular features that depict the person born under that sign. Out of the twelve animals of the Zodiac, the composer selected the six animals, which he thought could best be represented through music and would give the Suite the appropriate contrast: the Rat, the Buffalo, the Monkey, the Snake, the Pig, the Dragon.
