Year of composition unknown, presumably in the period 1723-1732 "Der saure Weg" - the bitter path - is how this motet is popularly known, taking its nickname from the fugue theme, with its awkward intervals which are a challenge to sing cleanly. But Bach's choral music contains a whole range of other challenges, too.
