West Side Story,
a theatre music by American composer LeonardBernstein that premiered August 19, 1957, in Washington, D.C., before moving toBroadway for a second opening on September 26, 1957. The musical is a20th-century American adaptation of the Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet.It has become one of the most frequently performed of all American musicals,and many consider it to be the definitive Bernstein composition.
For the creation of this musical, Bernstein wasjoined by lyricist Stephen Sondheim, playwright Arthur Laurents, choreographerJerome Robbins, and impresario Harold Prince. It ran for 732 performances, andit might have won the 1958 Tony Award for best musical had its competition notbeen The Music Man. In 1961, adapted for the silver screen, West Side Storytook 10 Academy Awards, including best picture.
