Inspired by Kurt Elling’s recorded version of the crossover jazz hit for Grover Washington, Jr., this arrangement is perfect for that “slow jam” spot in your group’s set! The arrangement is mostly written with 4-part ensemble figures, in spite of a few divisi moments. It features a male soloist (although the baritone range makes it sound reasonably good up an octave for a female singer, too). A variety of textures and tone colors makes this chart a fun one to perform, and it’s a classic KerryMarsh.com chart, originally performed by the first college vocal jazz group Kerry directed at Sacramento State (which you’ll hear on the demo recording, with the Elling-style solo sung by Anthony Williams).
