This is a tango duet for cello and piano. The title, Afligido, translates as "afflicted, distressed, grieving". The sudden death of my first wife, Linda, in August of 2004, was still having its effect upon me.
I wrote it in 2006 for Jodi Beder, the principal cellist of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra. It enjoyed two live public performances of which I'm aware, both in 2006: The first one was in Washington, D.C. by Washington Musica Viva (Carl Banner, pianist and Jodi Beder, cellist). The second performance, with Jodi Beder on cello and Stanley Sisskin on piano, was under the auspices of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra in Princeton, New Jersey -- a "Fall Musicale" on Nov. 5, 2006.

A friend of mine from Buenos Aires, Mariano Castro, liked the score, and he arranged it for bandoneo'n, guitar, and piano. He and Omar Massa recorded this arrangement in 2007 for his album, Oda Porteña. This arrangement on the todotango.com web site, is the first known recording, by a group from Buenos Aires, of a tango written by a person born and living in the USA.
The cello part is for an advanced player, while the piano part can be taken on by an advanced intermediate player.
