Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Luis Anjos Teixeira. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Standards. 9 pages. Luis Anjos Teixeira #4737293. Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889434).

"Christ lag in Todesbanden" - „Christ lay in death's bonds".

The piece is technically relatively easy and also appropriate for beginners.

Due to its spiritual depths is also ideal for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul.

The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I used some interpretation symbols but no notes where added or changed in this arrangement.

Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form.

I propose an interpretation in the arrangement but you should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Soul.

Have fun!

It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from the serious concert hall to a marriage, in Easter or even Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events.

When performed Live It will give you back a great  feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire.

The score was written on Finale.

The sound file was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of this score.

Thank you very much for taking your time to read this text and to listen to the file.

Sheers!

Historical context:

"Christ lay in death's bonds" is an Easter hymn by Martin Luther. It was published in 1524 in the Erfurt Enchiridion and in Walter's choral hymnal Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn. Various composers, including Bach, Pachlbel and Telemann, have used the hymn in their compositions.

The hymn celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus, with particular reference to a struggle between Life and Death. The third verse quotes from 1 Corinthians 15, saying that Christ's Atonement for sin has removed the "sting" of Death.

The "Word of Grace", means that "Christ would ... alone nourish the soul."

1 Christ lay in Death's dark prison,

It was our sin that bound Him;

This day hath He arisen,

And sheds new life around Him.

Therefore let us joyful be

And praise our God right heartily.

So sing we Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

2 O'er Death no man could prevail,

If mortal e'er came near him;

Through guilt all our strength would fail,

Our sinful hearts did fear him.

Therefore Death did gain the day,

And lead in triumph us away,

Henceforth to dwell emprisoned.

Hallelujah!

3 Now Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

For our defence hath risen.

Our grievous guilt He hath removed,

And Death hath bound in prison.

All his might Death must forego.

For now he's nought but idle show,

His sting is lost for ever.

Hallelujah!

4 How fierce and dreadful was the strife

When Life with Death contended;

For Death was swallowed up by Life

And.
