Prelude for a Soprano Instrument and Pianoforte, or as given in French, Prélude pour un instrument de soprano et pianoforte, is a concise piece written to showcase delicate and ethereal harmonic textures. The piece is music for the sake of music, without any programme.
Prélude was written with the soprano saxophone specifically in mind, and therefore the range may not suit all soprano instruments. The piano accompaniment is written in the piece's tonic key of G minor, though the solo instrument begins with a passage in C minor. The technique required is of intermediate level, the hardest challenge facing the soloist being the final measure, which asks the player to reach the very top of the soprano saxophone's natural range. Rhythmically, the soloist has much discretion in passages marked rubato, though the accompaniment's ostinato patterns must be strictly followed. The pianist faces minimal difficulties, whose part consists solely of large chordal harmonies that provide a solemn "martial" quality, and gives context to any horizontal dissonance. Given the freedom of tempo, the piece can last from three to five minutes, varying according to how slow the soloist takes it.
Prélude is suitable for student performance and is helpful in developing the soloist's range and expression. The piano accompaniment makes it also well-suited for student collaboration, and will build soloist-accompanist and ensemble skills among the players. Given the ambiguous (at best) mood of this piece, it is not the best choice for use in church services where either the formality or the atmosphere of the occasion do not match that of the music. It is entirely left to the discretion of the church musicians and the head of the organization in question. This piece has no intended audience, and no restrictions on performance, the exception being credit due to the composer.
