Martha von Sabinin's songs, perhaps not performed outside the salons of mid 19th century Weimar reveal a subtle and original voice filled with tender passion, longing and suffering. horoughly rooted in the musical style of her time, these distinctive pieces are not historical oddities, destined to quickly wear thin, but are songs which grow with repetition - in ression, musicality and nuance. They deserve a regular place in the standard Lieder repertoire for their excellence and the opportunities they provide both singer and pianist. First and foremost this edition is intended to be a practical performance tool. The songs are composed for Mezzo-Soprano and also suitable for baritone or bass-baritone. Care has been taken to preserve the composer's original markings in a readable and practical modern version, while at the same time adding scholarly and historical information to illuminate the cultural and human milieu from which these Lieder were created.
