Composed by Brandon Nelson. Concert,Contemporary. Individual part. 3 pages. Brandon Nelson #3000137. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912936).

Written as part of a cycle of pieces celebrating Japanese mythology, this solo for unaccompanied baritone sax depicts the goddess Benzaiten. She is the goddess of everything that flows: water, time, words, speech, eloquence, music and, by extension, knowledge. In addition, she is seen as a protector deity of the people and nation of Japan. Benzaiten is also regarded as bestowing monetary fortune to those she favors.

To me, the music for this goddess could not be but gentle serenity, put best as a lyrical, flowing melodic line. A modified mirror in form, the pitches are taken from the Hirajoshi scale, traditionally admired for its bright, supple nature.

Intermediate level, suitable for any occasion. Unaccompanied baritone sax.
