Composed by Andrew Hess. Contemporary. Score and parts. 23 pages. Andrew Hess #2335373. Published by Andrew Hess (A0.939126).

"Contrary Emotion" is an unusual string quartet piece, with the added texture of the piano and a drum set groove in 6/4 time.

Duration: 4' 42"

Program note:
Originally written to accompany a dance in which three dancers each represented a different emotion, "Contrary Emotion" uses three different 4-note ascending motifs and the differing textures of the piano, strings, and percussion to evoke happiness, sadness, and anger. Throughout the piece these motifs weave in and out of each other, at times working with and at other times working against one another to emphasize the complex and ever-changing nature of one’s emotions.
