The Baroque era composer and court musician's repertoire has by this time largely faded with the shining exception of his Musicalische Seelenlust which receives its debut recording with the ensemble polyharmonique led by Alexander Schneider. Written during a time when the devastating Thirty Years' War raged, the contrast of this composition which combines sacred madrigals alternating with small-scale sacred concertos may well have been Michael's appeal to sanity during a time of war.
