Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799446).Concerto d'Automne (Autumn Concerto) is a commission, a 1992 Commande d'Etat from the French government. It was written for the French trombone virtuoso Gilles Milliere. The first movement is meditative in nature with the trombone weaving in and out of the sound tapestry of the winds and strings. Subtle, quiet interjections punctuate the calm atmosphere – like nature sounds in the night near a pond. The energetic and dynamic second movement involves several cells of melodic and rhythmic patterns in the ensemble indicated by the conductor. The trombone rides on top of this with solos, dialogues and guided improvisations. The work concludes with a reminder of the 1st movement but in hyper-speed and with a highly intense ostinato by the strings. This leads to a final virtuoso flourish by the entire ensemble. The duration is 15'. This is a set of manuscript parts, thus the reduced price.
