Composed by Kathryn Ellis. 21st Century,Secular. Score. 56 pages. Published by Ellis (S0.24023).

TEXAS is a symphonic collection of (5) pieces for orchestra that illustrate historical events and places in Texas. Each movement is a free-standing piece for performance about 12 minutes in length. TEXAS - Fort Davis, is the fourth movement of this symphony, and depicts a day in the life of a Texas cavalry soldier, riding out on patrol. The music opens with a trumpet solo, and is rhythmic with complementary melodies. Themes are introduced that overlap in the opening of the piece, to depict activity on the parade field of the fort. As the soldiers ride out, the percussion switches from snare to claves and tambourine, and the rhythm switches from march-like to gigue-like symbolizing the cavalry riding out. The opening themes return with the soldiers' return to the fort. For community orchestra level.
