Larry Clark has created a heartfelt, lyrical new composition based upon the Japanese folk song "Mori no Fukuro" (The Forest Owl). The piece is pensive, colorfully orchestrated and dramatic. A welcome addition to the repertoire from this exceptional composer.
Japanese lullaby is based on the Japanese folk song "Mori no Fukuro" or in English "The Forest Owl." An entirely new composition is created using this pensively beautiful tune as the inspiration. The melody of the folk song is unique, in that it is ten measures in length. A slow drone in the lower strings with light pizzicato figures in the violins establishes the mood. The violas present the first statement of the melody in the rich lower register of the instrument. This is followed by a full-ensemble statement of the folk song with flowing "Alberti" figures in the cello and sustained notes in the viola that create tension in the harmony. The celli are then given a composed "B" theme that is developed throughout the rest of the work. The folk song returns in a canonic presentation for solo violin and solo cell. The "B" theme returns as a violin duet with pizzicato pulsing in the lower strings. This leads to a build-up into the final statement of the folk song with an obbligato in the first violins, an extension of the cadence that builds into the climax of the piece, followed by a return of the opening drone and pizzicato figures to complete the work.
