Composed by Mayone. String Trios, Miscellaneous Music. Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMIM14).

These three pieces come from Mayones Primo libra di ricercari a tre voci /Di Ascanio Maione Napolitano, Organista, published in Naples in 1606. Mayones pieces are based on the old La Spagna melody, which started life as a fifteenth-century basse danse tune. Ascanio Mayone (c.1565-1627) seems to have spent his whole life in Naples. His is known today principally for some rather innovative keyboard music; together with his fellow-Neapolitan Giovanni Maria Trabaci, he developed a kind of free, harmonically expressive music that today we associate more with the rather younger Girolamo Frescobaldi. -BT.
