An album edited by Matti Tuloisela (with Finnish and Swedish texts). The Finnish composer Heino Kaski (1885-1957) composed 140 solo songs in all, some 60 of which have been published. The edition is special in that some of the manuscripts and folk song arrangements included have never been published before. The publication of these songs by Kaski, a contemporary of Jarnefelt, was decided partly by chance: the discovery of a large number of previously unpublished manuscripts in a private Helsinki home. These songs have filled out the picture of Kaski as a true lyricist and the composer of direct, melodic music devoid of mighty dramatic build-ups. The strength of his songs lies in their warm, lyrical mood and simple construction rather than complex experiment often seeking to emulate the fashionable trends of the time.
