Weekend in the Country (2020) started out as a set of three or four miniatures aimed at depicting a trip home to Troy, MO for Ricucci-Hill. Then, as lockdowns swept the nation, it became a much bigger project. The seven movements of this piece depict various aspects of a weekend with the family: breakfast, a party, a fire, a walk in the woods. The piece follows the structure of a day stretched over a weekend. Perhaps one afternoon there will be a party, but the next day a walk in the woods? In Weekend, Ricucci-Hill also shows their playful side in including various musical quotations from Bach to drinking songs to Pergolesi. In all, it's a love letter to a mood, a state of being, only felt when there are no responsibilities but to enjoy your time home.
