Walking the Dog is one of the many songs George Gershwin wrote for the film "Shall We Dance." George Gershwin at the height of his powers. Instead of the bustling, complex symphonic scores he was now accustomed to writing, it is a simple, elegant little walk, as the title suggests.In the 1937 film, it accompanies a scene of (you guessed it) walking a little dog, aboard the luxurious deck of a cruise ship. Since it was heard in the film, however, the tune has taken on a life of its own and has become a popular piece for clarinetists around the world. In 1960, the song was published as "Promenade." Interestingly, it is also the only part of the film score of "Shall We Dance" that remains - the rest of the film's music unfortunately remains unpublished there are not even any recordings.

Walking the Dog is een van de vele nummers die George Gershwin schreef voor de film “Shall We Dance". George Gershwin op het toppunt van zijn krachten. In plaats van de bedrijvige, complexe symfonische partituren die hij inmiddels gewend was te schrijven, is het een eenvoudige, elegante kleine wandeling, zoals de titel al suggereert.In de film uit 1937 begeleidt het een scène van (je raadt het al) het uitlaten van een hondje, aan boord van het luxe dek van een cruiseschip. Sinds het in de film te horen was is het deuntje echter een eigen leven gaan leiden en is het een populair stuk geworden voor klarinettisten overal ter wereld. In 1960 werd het liedje gepubliceerd als "Promenade". Interessant is dat het ook het enige deel van de filmmuziek van “Shall We Dance" is dat overgebleven is - de rest van de muziek van de film blijft helaas ongepubliceerd er zijn zelfs geen opnames.
