Composer's notes: Written 1994 in a more improvised form for different settings. Inspired from all this different variations it is now full out composed. In between all the ensemble playing, there are some sections for example: a duo with Vibraphone and Flugelhorn, still with accompaniment from marimbas and piano. There is also a solo cadenza for the Grand Piano. It is a piece with a good drive and the mallets are almost walking all the time.

A four movement suite, 2 duets and 2 solos.

"-Walking Mallets" provides the percussionist with a fresh and innovative setting. Anders Astrand composed this work for vibraphone, flugelhorn, grand piano and three marimbas. All mallet players, with the exception of the bass marimbist, utilize four-mallet technique with particular attention to single alternating/double lateral strokes. The marimba and piano parts are minimalistic and accompanimental in nature, providing the listener with a sense of marking time or walking. The vibraphone and flugelhorn parts provide the main melodic interest in the form of written solos layered upon one another. The timbral palette of colors between all parts is spectacular."
