Joseph Bologne Chevalier Saint-Georges (1745-1799) is a contemporary of Mozart and has the distinction of being the first classical composer of African ancestry. His parents were a wealthy slave owner on a plantation in the West Indies and a slave. Little is known of his musical training, but he eventually became the leader of a very good Parisian orchestra and performed his concertos with them improvising solos at several points and wowing the audience. This 3rd movement of Concerto No.5 (Rondeau) is frequently performed as a single item and is arranged for piano and solo violin.
