I have always been passionately interested in composing for stringed instruments ever since the 1977 Suite for solo cello for which I won a BBC Young Composers Award. The lyrical and rythmical possibilities, the combined sonorities and sublties of bowing and expression have attracted me to compose an important number of string works. Recently I have been drawn to the viola - the Sonatine 1 [BIM VA28] for solo viola, the Three Paul Verlaine Songs [BIM MCX79]for mezzo-soprano, viola and piano, and now the Sonata.
In this Sonata I have explored a new structure for my music. Although crafted in three separate movements it should be thought of as in one movement. A break between the extended lyricism and the energy of the second should be natural. But the second and third movements should be almost continuous with just a short pause between them.
The composer is indebted to the distinguished British viola player, Sarah-Jane Bradley, for her generous help in editing and bowing the viola part.
