Playing on the popular title “Bugler’s Holiday” by Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), “Tubular
Holiday” features the tuba on a funky ostinato line on which everything else is built. Besides the
obvious reference to the tuba, the vernacular “tubular” means exceptionally positive, like “cool”
and “awesome.” It originated in this usage from surfers, in reference to catching a wave that
engulfs the surfer in a tube before dissipating. Hence, the cover of this work features an
extraordinarily unique surfing tuba player, immensely enjoying his holiday. The illustration was
done by Gizelle Lampitoc, “Jigz.”
This short piece is a happy tune and works extremely well to end the first half of a brass
quintet concert, or as an opener to the second half. Or, due to its brevity, this piece has the
flexibility of being featured as a feel-good song in any place during a brass quintet concert without
undue fatigue.
“Tubular Holiday” was completed on February 7, 2023.
