Tom Kelly altered the first verse of the song, which was shown initially to Anne Murray, who gave up recording it, and only later to Cyndi Lauper. The arrangements of the demo version resembled a gospel ballad with an emphasis on the piano sound, such as the song " Bridge over Troubled Water ". Steinberg told Songfacts that "Cyndi completely took the traditional arrangement apart and came up with something that was breathtaking.
