Dazu zog der Herausgeber Jürg Hanselmann Quellen wie das Manuskript in der Fondazione Cini in Venedig heran, um Fehler früherer Veröffentlichungen zu korrigieren. Darüber hinaus existieren fragliche Stellen, an denen der Komponist möglicherweise Fehler begangen hat – diese werden in der Ausgabe diskutiert und mit Korrekturvorschlägen versehen. Das Trio stammt aus einem bewegten Jahr für Rota, in dem seine Filmmusik zu "Der Pate" zunächst für den Oscar nominiert wurde, dann jedoch von der Liste gestrichen wurde, da sie angeblich einem früheren seiner Werke zu sehr ähnelte. Ebenfalls 1973 musste sich der Komponist mehrfach vor Gericht mit Klagen und Plagiatsvorwürfen auseinandersetzen, die Rota allesamt gewann. .
