Published by Richard Willmer (A0.1551736).This folk song, which is only once stated in its entirety, is nonetheless the basis for all six sections of this Toccata. I wrote it, beginning in early 2022 in response to events in Ukraine. At first I only wanted to harmonise one or more Ukrainian folk songs, so I turned to a Ukrainian lutenist, Roman Turovsky-Savchuk, who I knew as having a wide knowledge of the traditional music of his homeland. He directed me to his site, where, over the years, an amazing amount of material, all arranged for voice and lute, was to be found. I chose two or three folk songs, including this one, one of the most iconic songs of Ukraine.
Rather than being cast in movements, I chose to divide the work into interconnected sections, where only the folk song setting itself can stand alone.
The six sections are: Prelude - Aria I - Fantasia - Aria II - Fugue - Aria I da capo.
Though intended primarily for the harpsichord, this can be played on any keyboard instrument.
