Composed by Thomas McConochie. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 28 pages. Thomas McConochie #3560891. Published by Thomas McConochie (A0.1024731).

The three poems I have set to music are among the most famous in Chinese literature. They use wistful imagery to arouse bitter-sweet feelings. Morning in Springtime evokes images of beauty in Springtime such as dawn, chirping birds, but also countless beautiful flowers being blown down in a storm. Quiet Night Thoughts draws on imagery of the moon, associated with longing, to create a sense of sadness among the serenity of a quiet night. What I Most Pine For relates the mixed feelings of wishing one’s distant love well through alluding to the gifting of fruit as a symbol of love.

This music is suitable for community and professional ensembles. The post-modern, minimalist style is accessible with pleasing melodies, harmonies, and modes throughout the music.
