The Third Station of the Cross - Jesus Falls the First Time for solo piano is the third movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The music is characterized by recurring themes that appears in other movements of the entire piano cycle of 15 pieces or movements entitled The Stations of the Cross for Solo Piano by John Cartée.

The Theme of Time is introduced in this movement. This is a series of four to six repeated notes representing Christ humbling himself to become human through the Incarnation and subsequently enter earthly time. This theme is also presented in Movements 7, 9, 11 and 15 of the entire piano cycle. The Theme of Time is accompanied by the six-note Theme of The Cross, symbolising that the love of God expressed through his saving of mankind, is the reason for his entering earth time, emptying himself of his pure divine nature into both a human and divine Messiah - an obedient New Adam.

The Theme of Perseverance is also introduced into this movement. This is a steady 13 note idea in a major key. It represents Christ having to get up from his fall and keep going despite the pain and unjust suffering. The section gets louder and increases in speed. The Theme of Perseverance increases in drama, eventually played fortissimo and is accompanied by the Theme of the Cross.

The movement settles into a lyrical melody that is heard inside The Theme of Time. This reflects the ultimate peace of Christ as he knows that his suffering will heal all earthly suffering. The movement ends with a sweet and soft rendition of the Theme of Perseverance played in the higher register of the piano.

God laid on him the sins of us all. All of us like sheep, have gone astray; and the Lord has laid on him the inequity of us all.
Book of Isaiah 53:6.
