McBroom wrote the song in 45 minutes, at the suggestion of her manager who urged her to write "some Bob Seger-type tunes."
The Rose was a top-ten hit in the US, Canada, and Australia. It won a Golden Globe award in 1979. That same year, Bette Midler won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her recording of The Rose. In 2004, the song was listed in the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Songs in American Cinema.
