High above the banks of the Rock River in Oregon, Illinois, stands an impressive 48-foot-tall statue created by famed artist Lorado Taft. The official name is The Eternal Indian, but it is known to local folk as Black Hawk. It stands “proud and strong” as a tribute to the Native Tribes who flourished in the area before settlers occupied the region.
This original song by John Meola Lindhorst pays homage to those tribes. The story is told through three poignant verses, written from the statue’s perspective. The opening lines: “I have stood for many years, as a constant reminder, of the strength of my tribe.
