In recent years a number of excellent texts dedicated to the harp have appeared on the international publishing scene. The innovative nature of the present text lies instead in its ability to retrace the evolution of idiomatic harp writing, through a study of compositional styles and an analysis of significant harp works by contemporary composers. To this purpose, it presents a highly elevated number of examples taken from the compositions of some of the most important composers on the international panorama. The fact that in ItalyL’Arpa Moderna has been adopted as a textbook by many conservatory professors, and that numerous requests have arrived from students and teachersall across Europe to publish an English translation of the book, is sufficient to conclude that the structure of the book, and the methodological accuracy with which the topics contained in it are treated, still fill a considerable gap in international scholarship dedicated to this instrument.

Da molto tempo si avvertiva la necessit di un libro come L’Arpa Moderna di Lucia Bova. Sebbene la bibliografia sull’arpa sia molto ampia, mancava una visione d’insieme storica e tecnica che giungesse sino al più rigoroso presente. Questolibro risponde in parte il che non diminuisce minimamente la sua importanza al vuoto costituito dall’assenza di un trattato generale di orchestrazione in grado di compiere l’inverosimile prodezza di ordinare e riassumere l’ingente contributodella musica degli ultimi 50-60 anni in campo strumentale. Esiste gi una bibliografia eccellente su un certo numero di strumenti solisti, il che rappresenta un buon passo in avanti. E ora viene ad aggiungersi questo grande trattato sull’arpa, di unaminuziosit e di una chiarezza tali da renderlo presto imprescindibile.Necessario non solo perché facilita lo studio del meccanismo e del funzionamento dello strumento (con le sue peripezie storiche), ma anche perché stimola l’immaginazione creatricepresentando, riunite e ordinate, le innumerevoli possibilit che l’arpa offre. E dunque, cosa ancor più interessante, ci permette di approfondirne la conoscenza.
