1987 saw the theatrical release of Bernardo Bertolucci’s adaptation of From Emperor to Citizen: The Autobiography of Aisin-Gioro Puyi, the story of the last Emperor of China.  It won nine Oscars at the 60th Academy Awards; every category it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Score.
Ryuichi Sakamoto returns to his dual roles of composer and actor for The Last Emperor, having also appeared in- and scored the WWII prisoner of war movie Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
