By JOHN CARTÉE. Composed by JOHN CARTÉE. This edition: audio, pdf. Christian, Easter, Lent, Religious, Sacred. Score. 9 pages. John Cartée #1121878. Published by John Cartée (A0.1549423).
The Fourteenth Station of The Cross - Jesus is Laid In The Tomb for solo piano, is the fourteenth movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The entire piano cycle is characterized by recurring themes that appear in other movements of the entire piano cycle of 15 pieces or movements entitled The Stations of the Cross for Solo Piano by John Cartée.
The dark key of D-minor sets the mood for this movement. The opening theme in D-minor moves smoothly to one of its closest keys, C-sharp minor (VII chord). This adjoining of minor keys is heard throughout the movement. The dark moving harmonies maintain the momentum of a 16th-note accompaniment. The music then presents the lowest (and darkest) notes of the piano played with sustained pedal and fortissimo, so as to reflect a heightened sense of uncertainty where Jesus begins his descent into Hades, the unseen world. Jesus now comes to proclaim salvation to those who have previously died, held captive by a lack of perfect justice. These are the souls who have waited for the Good News of salvation and entry into heaven.
Melodies move seamlessly from one hand to the next until the final section, where we hear The Theme of The Cross (presented in Movements 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, & 11) but this time it is over a rich harmonic accompaniment symbolizing the richness and ironic beauty of The Cross.
Oh Light of Christ rising in glory, scatter the darkness of our hearts and mind. Prayer from the Roman Rite Paschal Vigil.
