The Fifth Station of The Cross - Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry The Cross for solo piano, is the fifth movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. This is the only movement of the entire 15 movement piano cycle where there is no connecting themes to other movements because of its uniqueness in that Simon of Cyrene is the only non-divine person to help Jesus carry The Cross. In other movements, the music is characterized by recurring themes in the entire piano cycle entitled The Stations of the Cross for Solo Piano by John Cartée.
Simon of Cyrene enters into the divine plan of helping Jesus carry The Cross on Good Friday. The opening in five-four time is soft and mysterious with an offbeat rhythm and sustained pedal. It gently develops into a forte section continuously acknowledged by octave notes. This idea is developed using the rich harmonic sounds of the lower register. It drives on, as Jesus keeps going and now with Simon's momentum striving into a climax on their journey together before it returns to the original mysteriousness.
