The title is refers to a divining ceremony practiced by a sangoma, the diviner-priest in the tradition of the Nguni-speaking people of Southern Africa. The music weaves in and out of Western and African musical styles, painting a musical portrait of the ceremonial life of these diviner-priests.This piece was commissioned by the Vancouver Recital Society for the violinist Scott St John.
