By Edna Ferber (Author). Composed by Richard Clarke. This edition: audio, pdf, streaming. 21st Century, Chamber, Classical, Contemporary. 96 pages. Richard Clarke Colorado #1108575. Published by Richard Clarke Colorado (A0.1535530).
Based on an American short story by Edna Farber, this piece for dance follows Nick, a modern-day Pan, a happy-go-lucky mechanic in bustling 1920s New York on his regular Thursday afternoon off.
The scene opens that morning in a busy mechanic's garage (Hoedown), the phone ringing off the hook from Nick's various lady friends trying to track him down. At the stroke of twelve noon, Nick is off, dressed, groomed, clean and out on a stroll (Easy Swing). Nick's theme (clarinet) is bluesy and full of bravado as he passes between the 'dames' that intercept him. When he finally breaks free, the clarinet line continues in a meandering jazz-blues solo, while another female character, Berry, is represented by Mendelssohn's Spring Song and the impending doom of war in Europe, by the haunting melody of There's a Long, Long Trail. The ending is gentle and retiring, as we hear the three themes intermingle, as well as Nick's lazy harmonica chords.
Originally written as a piece for dance or theater, this arrangement could also serve as a concert or competition test piece. It has complex technical passages on some instruments, as well a distinctive rhythmic and harmonic structure to match the theme.
