The familiar Lenten text, "Take up your cross, the Savior said," is given a new melody by composer Storm Knien. The five verses are set thusly: 1. SA in unison, with simple organ accompaniment / 2. SATB, a cappella / 3. SA & TB two-part canon, with minimal organ / 4. TB in unison, with slightly agitated eighth-note pattern in organ / 5. unison choir, with soprano descant and chorale-like accompaniment. This is a rather easy anthem to learn, since only one verse requires more than unison or 2-part texture. The SATB harmony is not difficult to master, but does contain some pleasant and mildly pinching dissonance. The organ accompaniment is not difficult, but interesting. Registration suggestions and changes are clearly indicated.
