Arranged by Calvert Shenk. Text: Iste confessor. A powerful, forthright arrangement of a sturdy Catholic hymn. General, Church Dedication. Octavo. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.4201).The tune Iste confessor was found in the Poitiers Antiphoner of 1746, and is also known by the name Rouen. This is most often sung with the hymn text, "Only-begotten, Word of God Eternal," a 19th century translation of the anonymous 9th century hymn, Christe cunctorum. This text and tune are expertly set here, with organ introduction, accompaniment and interludes. Verse 1 is mostly unison; verse 2 uses SATB harmony, accompanied. Verse 3 modulates to the subdominant, with a quicker eighth note pattern accompanying the hymn tune for unaccompanied voices. The organ enters before verse 4, which is unison with soprano descant. A choral Amen and Picardy third (major ending to a modal or minor piece) finishes the arrangement. The congregation may join the choir in singing melody on verses 1, 2 and 4.
