Roy is able to keep the integrity of the original Tchaikovsky piece intact and present it in a sweeping strings only arrangement that is sure to please. Exceptional!.
This theme is perhaps the best known melody from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet.The piece begins with a short introduction establishing an accompaniment motive. The first violins introduce the main theme. At m. 11 the accompaniment changes to a flowing, arpeggiated style. At m. 20 the original motive returns. The ensemble plays the main melody, this time harmonized before recapping the melody as it appeared in m. 3.Unison violins, violas, and cellos introduce a modulation to A minor. This unison should be performed expressively, emphasizing the rich quality of the unison strings. The violins again take the melody in m. 38. with the pickup to m. 41, the violas and cellos take the melody for a few measures followed by the violins. At m. 43 the accompaniment becomes more animated. The crescendo in m. 49 dramatically sweeps to the melody played fortissimo. The cello at this point has an ascending line as counterpoint to the melody. At m. 53 the cello states the main theme followed by the first violins in m. 56. A crescendo is made in m. 59 to the fermata. At m. 60 the violins and violas decrescendo as the cellos and basses quote the main theme.—Roy Phillippe.
