By Michelle Mooney. Composed by Fernando Sor. Arranged by Michelle Mooney. This edition: audio, pdf. 19th Century, Chamber, Classical, Contest, Festival, Instructional. 37 pages. Michelle Mooney #1137114. Published by Michelle Mooney (A0.1565039).

Sor's opus 6 was composed around 1816 whilst living in London. The studies were composed prior to his famous Méthode pour la guitar, but anticipate the pedagogical strength he demonstrated as a famous and influential guitarist and composer of the Romantic era.

Together with Mauro Giuliani and Ferdinando Carulli Sor helped the guitar to be regarded not simply as a folk instrument used to accompany singers, but as a solo instrument in its own right. Later guitarists such as Andre Segovia and Agustin Barrios Mangoré strengthened this perception, to the point today where the spanish-style guitar, developed in size and volume by Fransciso Tarrega, is regarded as an instrument in par with other more traditional concert instruments.

This study demonstrates Sor's melodic awareness as a singer and writer of vocal works, irrepressibly sweeping the melody from a poignant, gentle beginning in the minor key, through a passionate solilyquy and on through a change to the major key before leading to a peaceful finish.

The following is credit to Naomi Blumberg, Encyclopedia Britannica:

"Fernando Sor, also called (Spanish) José Fernando Macarurio Sors, (Catalan) Josep Ferran Sorts i Muntades, or (English) Joseph Fernando Macari Sors, (baptized February 14, 1778, Barcelona, Spain—died July 10, 1839, Paris, France), Catalan Romantic performer, composer, and teacher of guitar known for being among the first to play the guitar as a classical concert instrument and for writing one of the earliest books of guitar-playing methodology.
