(Gernot Wolfgang)

Gernot Wolfgang's Still Waters felt a little like Schoenberg meets Bill Evans. The score is interesting in the thickness of its textures and its darkish sonorities. (...) (Mark Swed, LOS ANGELES TIMES, 29.9.2010) // Still Waters is a contemplative piece for solo piano, described by pianist Gloria Cheng as 'Schoenberg meets Bill Evans'. The music portrays a forest lake whose otherwise tranquil surface is disturbed from time to time by animal or plant movement. (musicweb-international.com, May 2011) // Still Waters is a tranquil tone-poem for piano in subtle colours, marked by sighs and sustained notes...(GRAMOPHONE, August 2011) // The solo piano work Still Waters is predictably a contemplative work, but no worse for that, and it is an accessible, programmatic piece. (Barnaby Rayfield, FANFARE MAGAZINE Jul/Aug. 2011) // Gernot Wolfgang's short Still Waters recalls an old adage: to gain attention, speak softly. The exquisite work depicts a barely interrupted still lake. A two-note motif of complex but soft chords floats in ever changing harmonics. Impressionistic and atonal, the work describes the expanding ripples by the frisson of its chords. Pianist Gloria Cheng imbued the lovely work with a Zen-like calm. (Rodney Punt, LA Opus, 1. 9. 2012).
