"Death or Freedom" (Chechen: Ӏожалла я маршо, romanized: Joƶalla ya marşo) was the national anthem of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, a former partially recognized separatist state in the North Caucasus from 1991 to 2000. The music was composed in 1992 by either Ali Dimayev or Umar Beksultanov, and the lyrics were written by Abuzar Aydamirov.
The Dudayev-era anthem replaced "My Checheno-Ingushetia", the anthem of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Afterwards, "Joƶalla ya marşo" was replaced by "Shatlak's Song".
"Shatlak's Song" (Chechen: Шатлакхан Илли, romanized: Şatlaqan İlli) is the national anthem of Chechnya, a republic of Russia. It was written by Akhmad Kadyrov and composed by Umar Beksultanov, and it was officially adopted in July 2010.
In Chechen, "Shatlak" can mean "state of glee" or "bird of paradise".
Akhmad-Khadzhi Abdulkhamidovich Kadyrov[a] (23 August 1951 – 9 May 2004) was a Russian politician and revolutionary who served as Chief Mufti of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in the 1990s during and after the First Chechen War. At the outbreak of the Second Chechen War he switched sides, offering his service to the Russian government, and later became the President of the Chechen Republic from 5 October 2003, acting as head of administration since July 2000.
On 9 May 2004, he was assassinated by Chechen Islamists in Grozny, by a bomb blast during a Victory Day memorial parade. His son, Ramzan Kadyrov, who led his father's militia, became his successor in March 2007 as the President of the Chechen Republic.
