Sometimes, ideas get stuck in our heads, and sometimes they get stuck in the music (Für Elise, anyone?). This work was written with the intention of exploring a very simple musical motif (an ascending octave) from multiple perspectives: changes of register, evolutions of the underlying harmony, variations in responsorial phrases, and contrasting accompaniment patterns (chordal / Alberti). The player is encouraged to infuse the music with feeling and soul, finding nuances in the expression and paying attention to the specific articulations marked within the phrasing.
