Siegfried Thiele (b. 1934) studied composition, conducting and piano in Leipzig and Berlin. From 1962 he taught at the University of Music in Leipzig, being elected professor in 1984, principal in 1990, and honorary senator in 2001. He founded the Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra, which he directed for 15 years. A member of the Christian Community, his choice of religiously inspired texts for a high-profile commission to mark the opening of the new Leipzig Gewandhaus in 1981 fell foul of East Germany's anticlerical doctrine; only an intervention from conductor Kurt Masur ensured that Gesange an die Sonne for soloists, choir, organ and orchestra was premiered as planned. Thiele is a member of the Saxon Academy of Arts in Dresden. His Sonatina for Youth String Orchestra is an appealing and effective work for amateur ensembles of any size.

Throughout its long and eventful history, Edition Peters has consistently sought to support contemporary music, making it accessible in high-quality scores. The years in which Germany, and the publishing house itself, were divided between East and West form an important chapter in the company's story. The output of composers from the East German firm - then known as VEB Edition Peters, Leipzig - forms a unique and valuable part of the company's identity and, more widely, of European cultural history. Their works are compositionally and aesthetically diverse, while sharing a communicative creative drive. The artistic independence of the music created in East Germany between 1949 and 1990 makes this repertoire well worth rediscovering.
