"Sonata in G minor for Cello & Piano" is an adaptation of the original "Sonata in C minor for French Horn & Piano" by Mark A. Powls. It will provide challenges for both the pianist cellist but playable by an accomplished high school player or collegiate and professional level players. It would be a great addition to your Regional and State Music Festival repertoire and appropriate for recitals and other performance occasions. It is packed with unexpected twists and turns that you and your audience will love.
It opens with a rolling sixteenth pattern in the piano, shared by the left hand and right hand. This pattern must be rehearsed to feel fluid and even. Damper pedal (sustain) markings are written in at numerous points but are to be observed at the discretion of the pianist. The cello solo enters with a simple outline of the main theme and transitions into a slow section where the piano and cello carry on in a musical dialogue, followed by a development phase, recap, and a surprising (but satisfying) conclusion.
